In the coming weeks, Houston, TX, would have hosted its first national final of the You Be The Chemist® Challenge – a competition for 5th–8th grade students that highlights the importance of chemistry and encourages a future career in science.
Regrettably, the coronavirus outbreak forced the decision to cancel the event. Yet, while we won’t have an overall champion crowned this year – and industry, educators, and family members will be unable to cheer on these bright young minds at the final – we can still celebrate the achievements of those who advanced through the early rounds to become state winners.
Before coronavirus called a stop to proceedings, the Challenge program, run by the Chemical Educational Foundation® (CEF), had seen more than 36,000 students from 451 schools participate in 70 regional events across 40 states.
This year, the competition had been overhauled with the introduction of a new team-based format – with schools represented by four students rather than one.
The Challenge program is now in its 16th year and provides a unique opportunity for young people in middle schools to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of science and chemistry.
Both science and education have changed over the years, and teamwork and group assignments have become even more important. People with different skillsets are being asked to come together and complete projects, so we wanted the competition to reflect that. This new approach is what young people will see throughout their academic careers and as they enter the workforce.
Had the later rounds taken place, qualifying teams would have also been tasked with producing a short video on a specific theme – which this year was sustainability. This new aspect was again intended to encourage teamwork and highlight how the disciplines of science, technology, and public speaking can be a winning combination.
“For me as a leader, responsible for recruiting and retaining talent, I want young people to have a better understanding of chemistry and am proud to have been involved in the Challenge for so many years,” says Terry Hill, Vice President of CEF’s board, and CEO of Maroon Group – a sponsor of the competition.
“Research shows that children start choosing their career path in these formational years. That’s why You Be The Chemist is so important because it exposes children to STEM education. When you see the kids taking part and thinking about this as a future career, it’s very exciting.”
Many congratulations to all 37 state winners. Each team will receive certificates and medals to mark their achievements, and plaques will be presented to the schools.
Our thanks to all those who participated in this year’s competition and we look forward to hopefully seeing many of you again in 2021!
