Harnessing the Sun: Solar Energy's Impact on Chemical Distribution

As leaders in the $27 billion chemical distribution industry, members of the Alliance for Chemical Distribution (ACD) not only uphold the highest standards of regulatory compliance and safety, they are also meeting the evolving demands of our supply chain partners through commonsense sustainability initiatives.

In addition to participating in ACD Responsible Distribution™, which provides a sustainability framework for businesses, ACD members are integrating innovative technologies into daily operations to deliver greater cost efficiencies and customer value.

All Chemical Transport Corp., headquartered in Lakewood, New Jersey, is going above and beyond by implementing solar-powered energy into its business operations.

"We are excited to establish a set of solar panels using shipping containers as the base for a ground mount system,” said All Chemical’s Chief Operating Officer Anthony Coruccini. “The shipping containers will provide us with additional storage options, while the solar energy will contribute to a mini-grid that we are building onsite.”

By using an area of the property that’s underutilized, All Chemical has built its own solar capacity to even charge batteries.

“Our solar panels will be configured to charge batteries that will be used to power the entire property in the event of an outage,” Coruccini continued. “The system will switch between on- and off-grid operation, similar to a whole home generator. The plan is also to put a diesel generator behind the batteries to charge during the evening hours. This will require a much smaller machine and much less diesel than would otherwise be needed to run the entire building on generator power."

Normally, a 12-hour power outage would be devastating to business operations. But, through solar energy and battery storage, All Chemical is able to be fully operational, allowing them to continue serving customers and giving them a competitive advantage.

“As our solar farm takes shape, we are recognizing the tremendous benefits that it will provide our business, such as keeping us independently operational in case of a grid outage,” said Coruccini. “That’s a big deal if a storm comes through. We have peace of mind knowing that we can keep our business running all while having a smaller footprint.”

All Chemical has even taken steps beyond solar energy. On the transportation side, they track emissions and have upgraded their equipment to ensure compliance with the latest truck emissions standards.

In today’s world, the chemical distribution industry is faced with greater expectations for its responsible management and sustainability practices. By taking proactive steps to plan, measure, and deploy efforts like solar power into their businesses, ACD members can produce greater growth, increase efficiencies, and mitigate risks to provide extraordinary value for existing customers and open to door to attracting new ones.
