Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business offers an extensive program of professional development and training. Its world-class programs are ideal for those wanting to develop their business, strategy, and leadership skills.
“Regardless of educational background, these classes are meant for people who are ambitious and want to be operating at the top of their game in their companies,” says Meredith Conder, Executive Director, Duke Executive Education at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. “These classes teach them how to lead and succeed.”
Given the travel restrictions and social distancing rules because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Duke was quick to adapt its offering to provide virtual training online – and will continue to run several more courses over the coming months.
“The Zoom-based professional development classes have proven extremely popular,” says Conder – with the courses condensed into easy-to-digest online sessions to make them just as accessible and insightful in front of the screen as they would be in the classroom.
“The professors have worked hard to adapt and optimize the programs for remote learning, ensuring participants stay engaged and come away with new-found skills and knowledge,” she adds.
Each course is split into bitesize parts and spread across several days, with classes lasting between 90 minutes and 2.5 hours. They have all been adapted to allow maximum interaction with the faculty; and plenty of opportunities for questions, networking, and discussion.
Virtual coffee chats and chair yoga outside of the classroom experience provide additional networking opportunities.
“Some people may not have come to professional development programs in the past because they felt they couldn't take that much time off work or be out of the office – but they’ve found that these shorter online sessions work well for them,” she says.
Perhaps of particular interest to NACD members, suggests Conder, is the in-person Leading Business Strategy through Operational Excellence course, which will take place from December 7-10.
During these interactive sessions, attendees will learn the fundamentals of running a business and see first-hand the effects of their decision-making.
“We highly recommend this to all those who are looking to take that next step into a leadership position; they may come from a sales or product management position and want to enter the c-suite,” she adds. “This in-person course will help them look across their organizations and understand how every operations decision can have a financial impact.”
In-person training is held at Duke’s Fuqua campus in North Carolina, with all students staying at the hotel on-site.
