Annual Survey Showcases Industry's Successes

In the next few weeks, NACD member companies will be sent our annual Membership and Safety Questionnaire. As part of the survey, NACD members are asked to provide data on economic metrics like their employment and sales numbers as well as safety metrics like the number of reportable incidents onsite or in transit and lost workdays due to injury. Last year’s Membership and Safety Report highlights some of the topline data on our industry, and this year’s report will update those numbers as well as offer a look at some additional data points new to the survey.

Members are required to complete this questionnaire to showcase their efforts to protect their employees, customers, and communities as part of their commitment to NACD Responsible Distribution®, the association’s mandatory third-party-verified environmental, health, safety, and security program. The 7th Cycle of Responsible Distribution began in January and continues to set the benchmark for the industry.

Through our partnership with researchers at John Dunham & Associates, each year we produce a comprehensive report looking at performance based on the size of the company regarding sales and employment, the number of chemical shipments via rail and trucks, and information on accidents and injuries.

“We work with many trade associations but an in-depth survey like this is quite unique,” says Managing Partner, John Dunham. “Producing each report is an exhaustive process, taking about two months to gather all the information through hundreds of phone calls and emails. The results show that NACD members really do care a lot about keeping their workers and communities safe.”

Last year’s results showed that our industry continues to go from strength to strength.

NACD member companies generated more than $33.25 billion in sales in 2018, and handled a staggering 4.17 million shipments, weighing a total of 33.72 million tons – that’s around 148,565 tons per company. Collectively, these shipments travelled more than 410.9 million miles through both owned and leased truck fleets as well as third-party carriers.

In 2018, both average sales and average tonnage reached the highest levels seen in the last eight years of data collection.

Yet despite these impressive totals, there were still few safety incidents. There has been a downtrend seen since 2011, with an average of just over two incidents per firm in 2018. The report highlights that this achievement has been due in large part to NACD members’ commitment to Responsible Distribution.

Our members form a vital link in the supply chain and build the ethos of continuous improvement into their business models. It is this that has earned NACD members the enviable reputation of being best in class. We are proud of their exemplary safety record and that they continue to meet the highest safety and quality standards.
