NACD to U.S. Senate: Pass CFATS Reauthorization Bill Immediately

Critical Chemical Security Program Set to Expire at Midnight

Arlington, VA –Today, National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) President and CEO Eric R. Byer released the following statement as the U.S. Senate delays consideration of H.R. 4470, a clean, two-year reauthorization of the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Security (CFATS) program:

“The clock is, literally, quickly winding down on the deadline to reauthorize the critical and successful CFATS program. NACD is extremely alarmed that further delay by the U.S. Senate will jeopardize the security of our nation’s sensitive chemical facilities.

“Unlike many other programs that can be reauthorized retroactively, CFATS will cease to exist if it is not reauthorized by midnight tonight. H.R. 4470 was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives on an overwhelmingly strong bipartisan vote of 409-1. It’s time for the Senate to do the same by placing the will of many over the political posturing of one individual.

“As our nation continues to face increasingly complex national security threats, we call on Senate leadership to bring this bill up for consideration immediately to protect these sites from potential acts of terrorism and ensure the safety of the American people.”
