Arlington, VA – National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) President and CEO Eric R. Byer issued the following statement today commending the U.S. House of Representatives for passing the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2021.
“Over the past year, supply chain challenges have led to product delays, rising costs, and inventory stock-outages that have been felt along all supply chains. Adding to this, unfair ocean shipping provider practices are driving up shipping rates and, ultimately, prices for consumer goods, while threatening access to chemical products necessary for water treatment, food preservation, agricultural processes, pharmaceutical and vaccine production, and more.
The Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 2021 will go far in strengthening the Federal Maritime Commission’s (FMC) current enforcement abilities, expanding its authority to ensure industry-wide compliance with federal law, and establishing a streamlined process for addressing demurrage and detention complaints. NACD thanks Representatives John Garamendi (D-CA) and Dusty Johnson (R-SD) for their leadership in introducing the bill and thanks the entire House of Representatives for voting to advance it.
NACD is proud to endorse this desperately needed legislation and calls on the Senate to swiftly introduce and pass a companion bill.”
