NACD Welcomes FMCSA Ruling on Hours of Service Requirements

Today, National Association of Chemical Distributors President and CEO Eric R. Byer issued the following statement commending the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) final rule granting greater flexibility on hours of service (HOS) requirements for truck drivers.

“NACD welcomes the changes FMCSA made to HOS rules that will give truck drivers the flexibility they need to make deliveries in a timely and safe manner. We commend the agency for putting into place commonsense requirements that will ultimately make our roads safer while still allowing commerce to flow freely.”

“In particularly, we thank FMCSA for making specific changes including increasing the short-haul exception from 12 to 14 hours and from 100 to 150 air miles, extending by two hours the adverse driving conditions window, modifying the 30-minute rest break requirement to include ‘on-duty, not driving’ status as opposed to ‘off-duty’ status, and lastly, updating the sleeper-berth exception to allow drivers to split their required 10-hour off-duty breaks into two windows.”

“Taken together, NACD strongly believes these changes will lead to increased truck driver safety, less congestion on the roads, and more timely delivery of products critical to the U.S. economy. We thank U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Chao for making this is a top priority for her department and FMCSA.”
