NACD Welcomes House Introduction of CFATS Reauthorization Legislation

Today, National Association of Chemical Distributors President Eric R. Byer praised Rep. John Katko (R-NY) for introducing legislation to reauthorize the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) program on a multi-year basis. The bill’s cosponsors include Reps. John Moolenaar (R-MI) and Henry Cuellar (D-TX). Without reauthorization, the program is set to expire in January 2019. In place since 2007, CFATS regulates high-risk chemical facilities to ensure they have established and implemented security measures to thwart potential bad actors.

“The chemical distribution industry has been a diligent partner of the Department of Homeland Security, working to ensure our nation’s chemical facilities are safe from bad actors since CFATS was first created. Congress must ensure CFATS continues without interruption and set the stage for a smooth reauthorization process before the program expires in 2019. The Senate recently introduced CFATS reauthorization, and we are pleased to see the House continue this momentum. This program is vital to the chemical distribution industry and the security of the nation as a whole, and we are adamant about ensuring it undergoes a smooth, efficient reauthorization before the January expiration.

“We extend our thanks to Rep. Katko for introducing, and Reps. Moolenaar and Cuellar for supporting, legislation that would authorize the CFATS program for multiple years to ensure our nation’s chemical facilities are safeguarded against those that aim to disrupt the security of our communities and our economy through acts of terrorism. NACD urges swift bipartisan approval of this proposal in the House and Senate so that it can be sent to President Trump’s desk for approval. Our nation depends on this vital program.”
