Today, National Association of Chemical Distributors (NACD) President Eric R. Byer issued the following statement regarding a recently distributed “dear colleague” letter in the U.S. House of Representatives urging the multi-year reauthorization of the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (CFATS) program.
“Since 2007 when CFATS was first created, our industry has worked diligently with the Department of Homeland Security to ensure our nation’s chemical facilities are protected from nefarious actors. While the program has made our country more secure, we must continue CFATS without interruption by promoting a smooth reauthorization process before the program expires in 2019.
“The letter recently sent by members of the Congressional Chemistry Caucus to the leadership of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee urging the reauthorization of CFATS is a positive step to make sure the program doesn’t lapse, threatening our national security.
“After years of engagement with regulators, lawmakers, and industry, NACD stands ready to once again work with stakeholders to craft a policy that extends CFATS for many years to come. We thank House Chemistry Caucus Co-Chairs Dan Lipisnki (D-IL) and John Moolenaar (R-MI) and Senate Chemistry Caucus Co-Chairs Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Chris Coons (D-DE), Steve Daines (R-MT), and Gary Peters (D-MI) as well as the other 20 Congressional Chemistry Caucus member signatories for their leadership in ensuring CFATS renewal remains a top priority for Congress.”
